has appointed
Patricia Boig
as
Director of Alumni and Development | The School
Located on an attractive, 41-acre campus in Englewood, New Jersey, 12 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan, Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) is a coeducational, college preparatory day school with approximately 950 students in preschool through grade twelve. With a diverse student body from 80 surrounding communities in Bergen, Hudson, and Essex Counties in New Jersey and Rockland County and Manhattan in New York, the school provides a supportive environment that encourages students to take prudent risks, to explore a wide range of interests and activities, and to develop their inherent skills and talents. As part of a community in which all subscribe to the school’s motto, per ardua ad veritatem (through hard work, we arrive at the truth), students learn that, while true perfection is unattainable, the pursuit of excellence in every endeavor is an accomplishment in itself. The mission statement of D-E captures this spirit:
“As a community of learners, Dwight-Englewood School strives to foster in each student a passion for life-long learning. We seek excellence, honor integrity, and embrace diversity in order to develop the skills, values and courage to meet the challenges of a changing world and make it better.” Dwight-Englewood School exists today as the culmination of two significant mergers. In 1973, The Dwight School for Girls (founded in 1889) joined with The Englewood School for Boys (established in 1928). Twenty years later, the school added a lower division with the acquisition of the former Bede School. The resulting organization, built on the rich history of these three institutions, provides students a challenging education while also fostering a sense of integrity and personal responsibility.
The academic program at Dwight-Englewood helps students achieve their individual goals while also involving them in valuable teamwork. The highly experienced and knowledgeable 140-member faculty encourages hands-on learning, and with an 8:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 16, students receive a great deal of personalized attention. Students are encouraged to make connections among disciplines, to think creatively and analytically, and to develop problem solving and study skills as part of preparation not only for a successful college experience but for also a lifetime of learning and positive contribution to the broader community. A variety of extracurricular activities in athletics, the performing and visual arts, community service, and student clubs and organizations also provide opportunities for children and young adults to develop their leadership skills and to discover their interests and talents.
Although measurable outcomes are not the most important determinant of success, Dwight-Englewood students perform very well on the SAT, with Critical Reading, Math, and Writing scores for the class of 2010 at 615, 640, and 644 respectively. In addition, graduates regularly go on to enroll in top colleges and universities. College enrollments for the last four years have included George Washington University, New York University, the University of Pennsylvania, Boston University, Cornell, Columbia, the University of Michigan, Vassar, Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and Dartmouth, among others.
The Opportunity
Governed by a 20-member Board of Trustees, Dwight-Englewood’s current operating budget is $28 million, with tuition representing 85 percent of the school’s revenue. Last year, annual giving was close to $1 million – a 300 percent increase from three years ago, and the endowment is approximately $10 million.
Under the leadership of Dr. Rodney De Jarnett, Head of School since 2006, Dwight-Englewood has made significant progress in strengthening academics and extracurricular programs, enhancing both internal and external communications, improving the branding of the School, increasing enrollment, and professionalizing the School’s finances and business operations. A new Master Plan, approved by the Board in November 2008, addresses several capital improvements, including the construction of new Middle School, Fine Arts, Math/Science/Technology, Wellness Center, and Welcome Center facilities as well as the expansion and renovation of many existing buildings. These physical enhancements reflect and support the programmatic improvements that have already begun and will continue into the next decade, thus creating an even higher standard of excellence for the entire Dwight-Englewood School experience. Funding for the proposed Master Plan is currently estimated at $60 million.
Although the School’s development efforts historically have been limited in breadth and scope, the current capacity for giving among alumni and parents is substantial. In addition, energy, enthusiasm, and morale are at a record high as a result of the changes brought by the current administration over the last three years. Accordingly, D-E is seeking an experienced chief development officer who will partner with the Head of School and the Board of Trustees to capitalize on this renewed sense of excitement about the School by building a new culture of giving throughout the D-E community and by establishing a comprehensive development program that is reflective of the School’s size, age, philanthropic potential, and overall success to date.
